Writing an academic paper in English is a daunting task for EFL students even though they write every day, the type of English they are using in their writings should be based on a set of academic features including:

  • The appropriate choice of language and style.
  • A high degree of formality and well-structured paragraphs.
  • A clear and concise introduction, body of the paper and conclusion.
  • Evidence to support the points being explained.
  • Paper format is an important cue in academic writing.
  • Background knowledge on integrating academic sources and citing references.

Integrating academic sources and citing references are important ingredients in writing an academic paper or a whole dissertation. It shows that the student has made extensive readings in the field being explored; however, learners find this task difficult due to several factors. There are various constraints hampering students in integrating academic sources including the lack of background knowledge on the basic features of academic discourse, weak academic writing skills, low language proficiency, and the students’ attitudes towards reading in general and reading articles or academic research papers in particular.

Without a doubt, students find a variety of materials in collecting secondary data for an assignment in other languages rather than the target language they are using in their writings. As such, academic translation is required in taking the materials. However, some students resort to the use of automated translation which focuses on a word by word translation, without giving importance to the content of the text and its cultural components or they proceed to literary translation forgetting that they are conducting an academic piece of writing.

Based on the learners’ needs and enquiries, this call intends to invite academic writing experts, teachers and researchers specialised on academic writing to participate in the first national conference on Academic Writing at the Crossroads: Challenges and Perspectiveswhich will take place at Dr Moulay Tahar University, Saida on April07/08th, 2020.

This conference provides a space for academic writing specialists to exchange their expertise, knowledge and best experiences to better improve the quality of academic writing. Therefore, this framework endeavours to promote more approaches for the teaching and learning of academic writing. Thereby, the following research objectives spring from an urgent need to evaluate the teaching and learningof English academic writing in the Algerian contextso that to provide insights on possible solutions that can help EFL teachers in improving the academic writing skills of their students:

  • It aims to provide students with strategies to ameliorate their writings in English.
  • It attempts to unveil the challenges faced by students in writing academic papers mainly essays, research proposals and dissertations.
  • Raising the students’ awareness of the use of critical thinking in writing to develop their self-editing skills.
  • Helping students to critically evaluate scholar works by showing their strengths and weaknesses through improving constructive response.
  • Raising their awareness of the importance of literary texts in developing writing skills.
  • It also aims to shed light on the constraints facing students in writing academic papers in both literature and translation.
  • It endeavours to give an in-depth look at the status of teaching academic writing in relation to the fields of literature and translation.
