University of Saida Dr. Moulay Tahar
The University of Saida Dr. Moulay Tahar is a public institution with a scientific, cultural, and professional character, located in Saida Province, Algeria, in the western region of the High Plateaus. The university comprises five complexes that include administrative and pedagogical buildings, as well as facilities dedicated to university services. It is named in honor of the freedom fighter and scholar Dr. Moulay Tahar.
The university has undergone significant phases since its establishment:
Phase One:
It began as a Higher School for Teachers of Basic Sciences under Decree No. 245/86 on October 7, 1986, specializing in training secondary school teachers in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. In 1998, the school transitioned to a university center under Executive Decree No. 98/222 and was restructured in 2006 to include five institutes covering disciplines in science, technology, and literature.
Phase Two:
The university witnessed important developments with the issuance of Executive Decree No. 09-10 in 2009, officially transforming it into a full university that includes three directorates and four main faculties covering literature and languages, economic sciences, law, and science and technology. In 2013, the university’s structure was revised to include six faculties according to Executive Decree No. 13-200, enhancing the diversity of training and research programs.
Current Expansion of the University of Saida Dr. Moulay Tahar:
With the issuance of Executive Decree No. 22-193 on 6 Rabi’ al-Thani 1444, corresponding to November 12, 2022, the University of Saida Dr. Moulay Tahar experienced a significant transformation in its academic and administrative structure. This expansion reflects the university’s new direction towards enhancing its educational and scientific capacities and expanding its areas of specialization to meet the growing needs of students and the scientific community.
Currently, the university consists of four directorates, each aimed at supporting the core functions of the university:
1. Vice-Rectorate for Higher Education in the First and Second Cycles, Continuous Training, and Degrees: This directorate focuses on providing higher education programs for undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing continuous training and degrees that enhance academic and professional skills.
2. Vice-Rectorate for Higher Education in the Third Cycle, University Qualification, Scientific Research, and Postgraduate Training: It focuses on graduate programs and scientific research, managing university qualification and developing academic research capabilities in line with international standards.
3. Vice-Rectorate for External Relations, Cooperation, Activities, Communication, and Scientific Events: This directorate plays a crucial role in enhancing external relations and scientific cooperation between the university and local and international universities and research centers, as well as organizing events and scientific activities.
4. Vice-Rectorate for Development, Prospective, and Guidance**: It aims to support the sustainable development of the university through strategic planning, performance monitoring, and directing efforts towards innovation and future development.
New Faculties:
The university has been restructured to include seven main faculties:
1. Faculty of Arts, Languages, and Fine Arts: Offers various programs in literature, foreign languages, and arts, contributing to the cultural and creative capabilities of students.
2. Faculty of Social and Human Sciences: Covers disciplines studying society and humanity, such as psychology, sociology, and history.
3. Faculty of Economic Sciences, Commercial Sciences, and Management Sciences: Prepares students for financial and administrative fields through distinguished programs in economics and business management.
4. Faculty of Law and Political Science: Focuses on training specialists in law, international relations, and political science, contributing to legal and political awareness.
5. Faculty of Sciences: Offers programs in basic sciences such as physics and chemistry, supporting scientific research in these vital areas.
6. Faculty of Technology: Specializes in training engineers and technicians in modern technology fields such as electrical engineering, electronics, and telecommunications.
7. Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences: Focuses on teaching subjects related to the environment, biology, and geology, with an emphasis on sustainability and scientific research. This faculty also includes a medical annex established in 2023.
This expansion enhances the university’s position as a comprehensive educational institution capable of meeting market and scientific research needs, making it one of the leading universities in Algeria.
