Preamble:
The Arabic language faces fierce competition in the language market from living languages such as French, Spanish, Japanese and English, which strive to monopolise the global linguistic space.
There is no doubt that the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), aware of this danger and the major challenges surrounding it in the era of cultural globalisation - a phenomenon threatening identities, specificities and linguistic and cultural diversity - was prompted to call upon Arab states to establish an Arabic Language Day, to be celebrated on the 1st of March each year starting in 2007, emphasising the need to give particular attention to the Arabic language in the fields of culture and knowledge, which have become the true criterion for the progress and prosperity of nations, particularly through translation into and from the language.
On this occasion, and in application of ALECSO's recommendations, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the Higher Council for the Arabic Language - which considered it appropriate to involve the sectors concerned, foremost the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, represented by the University Dr Moulay Tahar of Saida - intend to organise a joint celebration befitting the status of the Arabic language and highlighting Algeria's commitment to it as, alongside Islam and Amazigh identity, an essential component of national identity. The event will include lectures and poetry recitations.
