The institution was founded in 1986 as a university centre attached to the University of Oran Es-Senia, welcoming the first cohorts in science and letters.
Upgraded to a university centre under executive decree no. 98-402, grouping three institutes: exact sciences, economic sciences and letters.
The centre became a full university under executive decree no. 09-25 of 4 January 2009, named "Dr Moulay Tahar University".
The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (MIT) and the Faculty of Law and Political Science were added, bringing the total to 7 faculties.
More than 12,000 students, 25 departments, 8 faculties, and an international network with France, Sweden, Turkey, Morocco and Canada.
